Brickworks Marketplace is a landmark new 48,000m² retail site, in Torrensville South Australia, with an estimated contract value of $40.2 million. The project consists of a retail complex including a Woolworths 4200, a Big W 55000, a Dan Murphy’s plus 40 specialty stores.
The Centre has almost 20,000m² GFA under roof and parking for approximately 700 vehicles. Built around the listed Brickworks ‘kiln’ and landmark chimney, the historic features were integral to the design of the new retail centre. Recognition of this site’s substantial history was captured by creating visual and pedestrian links to the heritage buildings. The site also includes interpretive signage to recreate the story of the original site and remain connected to the industrial aspect of the J Hallett’s Brickmaking Kiln.
The site was built over the pug holes of the original brickworks, where clay was originally removed. The holes were backfilled with dump materials and closed in the late 1970’s. The existing materials were compacted using deep impact technologies to compact approximately 3-4 metres depth.
The project was delivered in June 2015, ahead of schedule.
