Bluescope WGHR Ducting

The BlueScope Waste Gas Heat Recovery (WGHR) Ducting project, completed as part of the Blast Furnace Reline Project at BlueScope Steel’s Port Kembla Steelworks in Port Kembla, New South Wales, Australia, involved the steel plate detailing of industrial ducting and associated steel components forming part of the plant’s Waste Gas Heat Recovery system. The project supported the routing and management of process gases within the existing steel manufacturing facility, contributing to improved efficiency and reliability of the plant’s heat recovery operations.

The project comprised multiple ducting systems and associated steel components requiring accurate detailing and coordination to suit the complex industrial environment. The Blast Furnace Gas Ducting was designed to convey blast furnace gas generated during the ironmaking process between key process areas, enabling controlled gas transfer within the plant system. The Waste Gas Ducting facilitated the movement of high-temperature exhaust gases through the heat recovery process, allowing thermal energy to be captured and utilized. The Combustion Air Ducting provided the required airflow for combustion processes, supporting efficient operation of the plant equipment.

In addition to the primary ductwork, the scope included saddles, vertical supports, and control valve replacement assemblies, requiring detailed coordination to accurately represent the complete steelwork package and its interfaces with the existing infrastructure.

Revision Zero’s scope of work included detailed 3D steel plate modelling, fabrication drawings, and construction documentation for approximately 602.22 tonnes of steel ducting, and miscellaneous supports. The project-specific detailing scope included:

Inclusions:

  • Blast Furnace Gas Ducting
  • Combustion Air Ducting
  • Waste Gas Ducting

The completed detailing package provided fabricators and construction teams with accurate, coordinated information necessary for the fabrication, assembly, and installation of the ducting systems and associated steel components. All drawings were developed in accordance with applicable Australian Standards and project specifications, ensuring accurate detailing, streamlined project coordination, and efficient delivery throughout the project.
