Coal production in the region began in 1968 at the West Pit, which was originally part of the Howick Mine. Today, ๐๐๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ ๐ข๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ (which includes Howick) continues to play a vital role in the international coal market, producing over ๐ญ๐ฎ ๐บ๐ถ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ฒ๐บ๐ถ-๐๐ผ๐ณ๐ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฎ๐ป๐ป๐๐ฎ๐น๐น๐.
